On 28 April 2019, in Bihar, Home Minister Amit Shah thundered “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown he is a man with a “56-inch chest” by destroying terrorist hideouts in Pakistan”. The RSS and the BJP were trying to milk the Balkot strike for electoral purposes.
Modi has a macho image among his followers. They rever him like god. Or rather, the eighties Amitab Bachan. The angry young man who will single handedly bash dozens of enemies. Super Star Rajinikanth would be a more apt comparison.
The master politician Modi can single handedly destroy Pakistan, bash his enemies and teach the Muslims a lesson. The quintessential qualities for a fanatic bhakth. His shameless flaunting of his aggressive Hinduism added fuel to the fire.
So when the protesting farmers refusing to budge and their Bahubali could not put an end to the protest by any means, their image of their Hero started loose its charm. The fuel price hikes pinched him hard. But he willingly suspended the disbelief and continued to hail his hero.
Slowly momentum started gathering for the farmers protest. The second wave did dent their resolve, however they quickly regathered and tried to build the momentum again. The mowing of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri pushed the momentum to a peak. The Supreme Court with its scathing remarks added fuel to the fire.
The momentum was gathering. In the meanwhile, trouble was brewing between Yogi Adityanath and Modi for some time. When Yogi Adityanath government, started doling out advertisements, trying to create an image of a man more macho than Modi made Modi insecure. Already a very insecure fellow, who can not face a single question from a scribe, (mango interviews are exceptions), grew jittery.
He tried to cut Yogi’s power short, Modi sent Aravind Kumar Sharma, a former IAS officer to UP. He was to be made the second Deputy Chief Minister, replacing “It was, however, not clear if one of the two Dy CMs – Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma – would be dropped or UP would have three deputy CMs” according to a report in Deccan Herald.
But, Yogi hit back sharply. He refused to bow down and shown his revolt. There was no option before the RSS to drop him with elections just a few months ahead. The RSS point blank told Modi to back off. Modi was forced to meet Yogi to iron out the differences. In June 2021, Yogi met Modi in Delhi and categorically asserted his clout. Modi had to back off.
Being a canny politician, Modi kept plotting. He threw a reverse googly. He started praising Yogi Adityanath to the hilt. He went to the extent of saying Yogi, UP saw growth only after Yogi became CM.
BJP and RSS leaders and members are shocked by the Modi’s sudden announcement. They are perplexed what prompted the move.
Highly placed in RSS say, Modi’s sudden decision is due to a high priority confidential report he received from Ajit Doval. Sikhs, who are in the forefront of the agitation are a sensitive lot. They do not forget their betrayers. And they never back off from an honest fight.
Most important of all, most of the farmer family in Punjab, have one or two of their members in the uniformed service. They are numerically a majority in all armed forces. Any crack down on the farmers may raise a mutiny in the army.
The five year extension to Defence Secretary too has unnerved the force.
The next factor that has contributed to Modi’s U Turn is the RSS. All said and done, RSS is an organization which grew on the root of Swadeshi principles. Protecting the interest of the farmers is also a part of this farmers movement’s area of interests. The organization know, that no political party can afford to survive antagonizing the farmers. In Indira’s regime the slogan was “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”. The fact that Modi is throwing farmers to the dogs for the benefit of two greedy corporates.
RSS sensed the alarm bell following the results of Bengal polls. The by poll results strengthened their fear. To confirm their fear, a Kison Morcha outfit has declared that this is not the end of their struggle.
Modi who is a worst example of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, is not a man to back down. Highly placed sources in the RSS, confirm that he was told point blank to back off or quit. Modi, a person with low self esteem could not even imagine a life without power. He humbly bowed out.
A source from RSS, who spoke after the withdrawal of farm laws said, the RSS high command had started feeling that Modi has grown out of his shoes. They have sensed his efforts to infiltrate the organization through his NSA Ajit Doval. They decided to put Modi in his place and he was directed to go on live television and speak as he was told.
The opposition has sensed blood. The mood among the activists is gung ho. They are elated and declare that “Modi has shown his vulnerability”. They have decided to consolidate and go full guns blazing against Modi. They have also decided to exploit the wedge between Yogi and Modi.
The remaining days ahead of UP polls will be very interesting.

Something seems amiss, only the Punjab and UP farmers protested and the rest of india was comparatively calmer. Are we sure that there is no vested interest behind the farmers protest? To me the repealing looks like more of a poll strategy…
